THE SOCIAL PROTOCOL: FROM PRODUCT TO CO-OWNER

THE SURVEILLANCE PARADIGM
Modern social media operates on the mechanics of Surveillance Capitalism. In this model, personal data isn’t just collected; it is harvested as raw material for behavioral prediction markets. When a platform’s primary duty is to maximize shareholder value through engagement metrics, the user experience is naturally engineered toward algorithmic addiction and data extraction.
THE CO-OP ALTERNATIVE: COSOCIAL.CA
I have migrated my primary social presence to Cosocial, a Canadian non-profit cooperative. The shift is a fundamental change in the digital power dynamic:
- Member-Owned: As a co-op member, I am a co-owner of the service. Decisions are driven by user-benefit, not venture capital exit strategies.
- Data Sovereignty: My digital footprint is not a commodity. There are no tracking pixels or algorithmic shadow-profiles being sold to the highest bidder.
- Localized Governance: By supporting a Canadian-run Mastodon instance, I am investing in a digital commons that adheres to local values of privacy and democratic oversight.
THE FEDIVERSE MANIFESTO
This is more than a change of app; it is a return to the Open Web. By utilizing the ActivityPub protocol, I can interact across the “Fediverse” while maintaining a secure, member-governed home base.
- No Algorithms: My feed is chronological and human-curated.
- No Ads: The service is funded by its members, eliminating the need for intrusive marketing.
- True Portability: I own my identity. If the server goes dark, the protocol allows me to migrate my entire social graph to a new node.
